Even though the FBI has used extraordinary measures to seize dark web marketplaces, drug users are increasingly turning to them to buy narcotics, newly published results from the Global Drug Survey (GDS) 2016 suggest. One told the programme “I feel much safer online than doing transactions in the real world. I used to sell drugs in the real world. Nowadays I almost strictly use the dark web for any drug transaction.” Still, the disruption of Hydra dealt a “huge blow“ to the ecosystem, according to multiple sources on the Dark Web.
For instance, when looking at the kinds of drugs on sale, Judith and David included 12,103 listings. But this meant leaving out 34,507 that were not labelled as a specific drug or were for other kinds of products, such as stolen credit card information or Netflix log-ins. Finally they removed listings priced over $50,000, which was assumed to be used as placeholders (known as “holding prices”) to signal that a vendor was out of stock rather than a reflection of the usual price of goods they supply. Our goal here was to identify anonymous forum posts with the topics of opioid commodity promotion (eg, listing promotion) and review (eg, report fake opioid vendors). We then analyzed these forum posts to profile underground opioid trading behaviors. A New Kind Of Open, Networked Global Criminal Market?
Anonymous online marketplaces are usually platforms for sellers and buyers to conduct transactions in a virtual environment. They usually come with anonymous forums for sellers and buyers to share information, promote their products, leave feedback, and share experiences about purchases. To understand how it works, we describe an opioid transaction’s operational steps on the anonymous online marketplaces and forums. We present a view about how such services operate and how different entities interact with each other (Figure 1).

Another 24 per cent of sellers didn’t indicate the country they were shipping from. The researcher found about 95 sellers, or four per cent, indicated they shipped from Canada during the 12-month period. Judging by that buzzing trade, there’s little hint that just the week before, global law enforcement announced the takedowns of two of the world’s largest dark-web drug sites, known as Wall Street Market and Valhalla. Or that the most popular market, called Dream, had taken itself offline at the end of last month, perhaps sensing law enforcement closing in. We first conducted a whole-site crawl of anonymous online marketplaces and forums to solicit data. We aimed to profile the opioid supply chain in anonymous markets and forums via a large-scale, longitudinal measurement study on anonymous market listings and posts. Toward this, we propose a series of techniques to collect data; identify opioid jargon terms used in the anonymous marketplaces and forums; and profile the opioid commodities, suppliers, and transactions. She also recommends anyone who uses drugs or knows someone who does, to carry multiple doses of the overdose-reversal drug naloxone (name-brand “Narcan”).
