Pills with the Mercedes, Mitsubishi, and Honda logos were often the most likely to contain no traces of MDMA, while Toyota and Maserati pills were more commonly found mixed with other substances rather than pure MDMA. On average, less than one in three ecstasy pills purchased or produced in the U.S. are composed of pure MDMA. It may sometimes be referred to as the “love drug” or the “hug drug,” but ecstasy around the world is getting stronger, deadlier, and even more popular than ever, leading many to struggle with ecstasy addiction. Its real rise began around 2018, with Stoke-on-Trent becoming one of the most heavily impacted areas. In Stoke alone, hospitals saw over 1,200 admissions related to monkey dust use between 2018 and 2020, with symptoms ranging from extreme paranoia to violent behaviour. While small amounts may result in fines, more severe cases, such as distribution, can lead to prison sentences of up to five years.

Other norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitors (NDRIs) include pharmaceuticals such as methylphenidate (known as ritalin and used to treat ADHD) and buproprion (an antidepressant). But the psychoactive and stimulant effects of MDPV are much stronger than pharmaceutical NDRIs. Like other cathinones, MDPV is a stimulant and shares some effects with other stimulants such as amphetamine, cocaine and MDMA. MDPV produces its effects by inhibiting the reuptake of two important signalling molecules (neurotransmitters) in the brain; norepinephrine and dopamine. “Police say to anyone who is considering experimenting with illicit drugs or new psychoactive substances, no matter how they are branded or presented, do not do it,” the spokeswoman said. Fatal instances involving young people and chemicals are always heartbreaking, perhaps the death of the young child will wake up the young people in the area to use extreme caution when taking street drugs.

Staffordshire police reported in August that they were receiving an average of 10 calls or more a day related to monkey dust. MDPV belongs to the cathinone family of drugs, which are thought of chemically as “cousins” of amphetamines such as MDMA (the primary ingredient in ecstasy) and amphetamine (speed). Another article cited the drug’s powerful hallucinogenic effects, saying that “users have been filmed running into traffic, mutilating themselves, teetering on rooftops and jumping from buildings”. It was only when Ross-King was spotted by a nearby medical officer, after bumping into a group of people and falling over, that she was taken to the medical tent—with a body temperature of 41 degrees and a rapid and irregular pulse. She was transported to Westmead hospital shortly thereafter, arrived unconscious, and quickly went into cardiac arrest. After four hours of attempted resuscitation she was declared dead.

Parents hug your children, and please talk to them about drug safety. A person may experience the intoxicating effects of MDMA within 45 minutes or so after taking a single dose. Those effects include an enhanced sense of well-being, increased extroversion, emotional warmth, empathy toward others, and a willingness to discuss emotionally-charged memories. In addition, people report enhanced sensory perception as a hallmark of the MDMA experience.

More than 140 individual synthetic cathinones have been identified as illicit drugs, so users can never be certain about a substance from its street name alone. As a stimulant, the effects of monkey dust are similar to those of cocaine or amphetamines. It peps up your energy levels, boosts your confidence and dramatically increases risk-taking behaviour. In some states across the country it’s even less likely that drugs being sold as ecstasy contain even a fraction of ingredients users may be anticipating. In 26 states, our research revealed that drug samples were even less pure than the national average.

Wario is a Super Mario character, who’s the evil archnemesis of the series’ protagonist, Mario. It’s unclear exactly when and where the pills first emerged, but posts online about them seem to date back to 2019, while the DrugsData report appeared to source them from Switzerland. The Wario pills are usually light or dark pink, and per a 2019 KnowDrugs report, can contain over 300 milligrams of MDMA — which is double what’s considered to be a high dose. Therefore, they can be potentially lethal if taken all at once. Australia witnessed a small increase in the proportion of people aged 14 or over who had tried one of these synthetic drugs at least once in their lifetime from 0.4% in 2013 to 1% in 2016.
Samples containing two logos in particular (Tesla and Lamborghini) were exclusively linked to entirely pure traces of MDMA. Internationally, studies have revealed drugs with the Tesla logo may be pure, but could also contain dangerously high levels of MDMA. While the average ecstasy pill may include anywhere from 80 to 120 milligrams of MDMA, some Tesla branded samples have been found to contain more than 230 milligrams of the substance.
- Have a shower—a cold one, if you can manage it—and replenish yourself with some water and half-decent food.
- Start by taking a small amount—maybe a half or quarter-dose—and see how it makes you feel.
- So trying to differentiate your product in the market is one reason.
- For these reasons, a medical detox is always strongly recommended as the first step towards recovery from an Ecstasy problem.
- Although these kinds of memes emerge all the time, the Wario pill hit the headlines in June 2019, when a 27-year-old man was caught with over 100 of them in Japan.

A synthetic stimulant known as “monkey dust” has dominated headlines this week with claims that its use has triggered a nationwide warning due to its disturbing side effects of psychosis and strong hallucinations. From there on it’s just a matter of waiting out the storm. Surround yourself with positive people, go easy on the physical exertion, and don’t watch, read, or listen to anything that could potentially topple your fragile emotional state. Also try to wait a little while before you take MDMA again—ideally at least three to five weeks. You’ll be better placed to maximise the benefits that way. A study which replaced the diets of rats with 25 per cent plastic reported ‘strong evidence’ of safety and received a chemistry prize for its surprise findings.

The DISC Trust is a peer-based harm reduction service, part of the New Zealand Needle Exchange Programme and a licensed drug checking service. DISC aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people who use or inject drugs through harm reduction. DISC operates the South Island’s needle exchange outlets, regular drug checking services in Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin, as well as static and mobile hep C testing, treatment and support services. DISC Trust is a member of Harm Reduction Coalition Aotearoa and supports human rights and health-based approaches to drugs. Although the drug was given to the animals in doses equivalent to human doses, it was injected into the animals—a route that has been shown to be twice as potent as taking the drug orally, the usual way that people take it.
This week’s reports of monkey dust use appear to have stemmed from UK reports of the drug in late 2018. Staffordshire police began to report long-term addictions and violent behaviour from users. When consumed, the drug binds to norepinephrine and dopamine transporters in the brain, inducing a high that is reported as similar to cocaine, methamphetamine (ice), and MDMA.

Monkey dust is the street name for MDPV (3,4 methylenedioxypyrovalerone), a synthetic stimulant that is both cheap and incredibly dangerous. These side effects are thought to be the result of how the drug affects serotonin levels in your brain and are what sometimes causes the violent and erratic behaviour that monkey dust abuse has become synonymous with. In 2015, three men were found dead on New Year’s Day as a result of ingesting high traces of PMA (para-Methoxyamphetamine) they believed was ecstasy in pills designed with the Superman logo.
The ecstasy pills shaped with the Superman logo may not even contain MDMA. All 11 victims luckily survived in Australia, unfortunately 4 passed away in England due to the Blue Superman. In a recent study done by an organization called Addiction Now, the worlds most popular ecstasy pills are ranked.
